The bishops have appointed a director for the new national tertiary education institute, The Catholic Institute.

She is Dr Anne Tuohy, who presently heads the School of Theology at Australian Catholic University’s Strathfield campus in Sydney.

Dr Tuohy is an old girl of St Mary’s College, Wellington and began her tertiary study at Victoria University of Wellington.

She has had a distinguished career in teaching and research in the area of Catholic theology and in the formation of leaders of institutions in a pastoral and education outreach and response.

TCI is the provider, on behalf of the New Zealand Catholic Bishops’ Conference of formation for those involved in education and pastoral ministry in Aotearoa New Zealand and to engage in research and discussion in New Zealand in all areas of church and its ministries.

Dr Tuohy has a primary interest in education and has taught across all levels of the educational system in New Zealand, England and Australia.

Her main teaching area is in Systematic or Foundational theology with a particular emphasis on theologies of social critique and sacramental theology.

More recently, she has become involved in the relationship between theology and the social sciences and is currently working with initiatives involving the Catholic Health Care sector.

Her doctoral thesis was in the area of political theology contrasted with feminist theological hermeneutics and she has published widely in these areas.

Dr Tuohy will take up her appointment in early March 2012.
