First woman to lead St Vincent de Paul

The St Vincent de Paul Society has elected its first woman national president.

At its national council meeting in Wellington on Saturday 18 March, the Society elected Liz Chiappini who is currently president for the Hutt Valley/Wairarapa region.

She is also the only second-generation national president to hold this office. Her late father, prominent Wellington businessman, Norman Gusscott, was the national president from 1965-1970.

The Society of St Vincent de Paul, an international Catholic lay organisation, works to promote human dignity and justice through personal contact with those in need. The society exists in 141 countries worldwide, has 710,000 members and serves 15 million in need. The society in NZ comprises 25 area councils and 164 conferences.
