The Young Vinnies of Sacred Heart School Reefton are a small but active group who enjoy ‘living their faith’ by doing simple things to help others in the parish and wider community.

Their aim is to have fun while bringing joy to others.

Activities they have been involved in include making sprays for Mothers’ Day and given out at Mass, entertaining hospital patients and organising all kinds of fund raising activities.

When Sacred Heart staff member Christine Rock recently saw an advertisement on TV promoting Pink Ribbon Breakfasts to raise funds for the Breast Cancer Research Fund, she was keen to share the suggestion with the Young Vinnies and Mrs Jan Morris their school coordinator.

After registering on the Pink Ribbon Breakfast website, the fundraisers sent a helpful kit of pink balloons, teas and coffee samples, merchandise to sell, pink ribbon brooches and pink wristband, as well as useful information explaining how to host a breakfast.

The Young Vinnies prepared and decorated a spare classroom with balloons and posters.

At the breakfast, two senior girls, Alyah Archer and Sapphire Hamill, manned the donation box and raffle tablet and sold merchandise.

Children and families contributed a plate to share for the breakfast. Pancakes with maple syrup, honey or golden syrup were very popular, as were the range of muffins, fresh fruit, yoghurt, cereals, marshmallows, toast, juice and flavoured milk.

Parish priest Father Phil King-Turner joined the happy gathering of children, parents, grandparents and parishioners.

Over $200 was raised for cancer research through the efforts of this small but enthusiastic Young Vinnies group.
