The Covenant of Napier, comprising interfaith unity between Napier’s Catholic, Anglican Methodist and Presbyterian Churches, held inner-city, ecumenical services on Wednesday evenings throughout Lent. The first, on Ash Wednesday, was at St John’s Anglican Cathedral, followed by services at St Patrick’s Catholic Church, St Paul’s Presbyterian Church, Knox Presbyterian Church, St Thomas More Catholic Church, and Trinity Methodist. Around 50 to 60 people attended each service, with fellowship afterwards.

On Good Friday the Ecumenical service starts in Clive Square with a prayer at 9.45am then carrying the Cross in silent witness to St Patrick’s Church for the 10am service.

The annual ‘Way of the Cross’ walk in Taradale, on Good Friday, involves a walk from All Saints Anglican Church to St Columba’s Presbyterian Church and then to St Mary’s Catholic Church. The cross is carried with song and prayer along the way.

The theme for the Covenant throughout this year is ‘Weaving the Bonds of Belonging’.
