Papal honour for Napier’s George

St Patrick’s Parish Napier recently presented its oldest parishioner, George Nicolson, with a Papal Blessing. He was the centre of attention at the Sunday Mass, surrounded by his family which included his daughter, son-in-law, granddaughters and their husbands, and nine great-grandchildren. His great faith and love of God has been an example to all.

Aug07NapierNicolson.jpg George was born in Hampden, North Otago, where family members are fourth-generation farmers, and has lived in Napier for the past 35 years. Failing eyesight prompted him to sell his car in 1996 but he continued to live in the family home until 2006. His vegetable garden was his pride and joy, supplying neighbours, friends (and the presbytery) with produce for a number of years.

His wife Sylvia went to her eternal rest in 1999.

The photo shows George with Monsignor Tim Hannigan and George’s daughter, Mrs Gabrielle Marshall.
