Anniversary of Archbishop’s ordination

Archdiocesan office staff gathered on Thursday, 4 September to celebrate the 32nd anniversary of Archbishop Paul’s ordination.

The future Archbishop Paul Martin SM was ordained “on a very wet day” on September 4, 1993 by Bishop Peter Cullinane. His ordination took place in Hastings, but in the St John’s College gym, as the local parish church had been destroyed by fire. After numerous roles in New Zealand, Rome, and service as the Bishop of Christchurch, he became Archbishop of Wellington in 2023.

As he told staff at a morning tea celebrating his ordination, “there’s a great freedom in saying yes, and trusting in God.”

Thank you Archbishop Paul for your ministry and service.
