Liturgy at a landfill

June 2025

It was an emotional winter morning on Monday (June 16) as the Ecology, Justice and Peace Commission held a Penitential Liturgy at Spicer Landfill in Porirua.

Surrounded by rubbish and items people had thrown away, Father Alfred Tong led prayers, singing and shared a message. Special thanks also to Adrienne Gallie, Stephanie Clarke, Carolyn Carr, John Kleinsman, and Dr Deepa Goswani, Community Waste Minimisation Advisor at the Porirua City Council.

As Pope Francis urged us, as we become more accustomed to injustice and the throwaway culture of our society, there ultimately is no “away” – everything goes somewhere. And that somewhere is here.

Please pray for our planet, and that we may look after it – and look after each other.
