We are now in the midst of the Season of Creation. But what is this important Vatican initiative?
The Season of Creation is an ecumenical initiative celebrated every year from 1 September 1to 4 October (the date of the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi). It is promoted and supported by organisations including the Laudato Si’ Movement, and other religious groups such as the World Council of Churches, the Lutheran World Federation, and the Anglican Communion.
The theme of the Season of Creation 2025 is “Peace with Creation.” The Laudato Si’ Movement has prepared a Celebration Guide, including prayers for creation and looking after our earthly home. You can see it below:
As Isaiah 32:16-18 (RSV) says: “Then justice will dwell in the wilderness, and righteousness abide in the fruitful field. And the effect of righteousness will be peace, and the result of righteousness, quietness and trust for ever. My people will abide in a peaceful habitation, in secure dwellings, and in quiet resting places.”
And as Pope Francis urged us, “As sacred Scripture teaches, the earth is the Lord’s and all of us dwell in it as aliens and tenants’ (Leviticus 25:23). If we really wish to prepare a path to peace in our world, let us commit ourselves to remedying the remote causes of injustice, settling unjust and unpayable debts, and feeding the hungry.”
