We are all encouraged to prayerfully discern how we can give financially to the work and ministry of our Church.

Your generous gifts are what keeps your parish and the Archdiocese of Wellington running. The bulk of the money – 82 cents out of every dollar, including 32 cents of every dollar that goes to the Clergy Trust Fund – that’s collected at Mass and through other means stays in your parish. 18% of the money given to your parish goes to the Archdiocese.

This money is used for a wide number of programmes and services that help serve the material and spiritual needs of people across Aotearoa New Zealand and in your parish, including:

  • Catholic Social Services (providing services including meals for the poor, addiction and counselling services, etc.)
  • Catholic aid and development
  • New Zealand Catholic Bishops’ Conference (NZCBC)
  • Diocesan operations, including:
    • Pastoral and ministry programmes
    • Property development and maintenance
    • Catholic education
    • Administration and governance
    • Property development and maintenance
    • Safeguarding and professional standards
    • Social justice and outreach
    • Communications and media
    • The Archbishop’s office
  • National Catholic operations, including:
    • Catholic tertiary education
    • Parish renewal
    • Catholic evangelization and enquiry
    • Liturgy
    • National communications

The Archdiocese does not receive any funding from the Holy See. Funding comes from the 18% of money collected by parishes is the primary source of income for the Archdiocese.  This is why gifts are so important.

The spirituality of generosity

In the video below, Archbishop Paul Martin discusses what giving can look like, its spiritual importance, and offers encouragement as we think about our giving.

How to give

Prayerfully discern your ability to give. Talk to your local parish – different parishes will have different ways to accept giving.

As Catholic Christians, we are part of a family: our immediate family, our parish community, our Archdiocese, and our wider Church in this country and universally. God calls all of us collectively to ministry and mission. Our gift to the Church has an impact both here and further afield.

Support your Catholic Foundation

The Catholic Foundation, established by Cardinal Tom Williams, has for almost 50 years been a pillar of support for the Archbishop and the Archdiocese of Wellington. With $11 million distributed and a $14 million fund, the Foundation has truly made a difference.

But the work isn’t finished. Your bequest or membership isn’t just a donation; it’s an opportunity to join a lasting family, as the principal remains invested while the income generated funds good works. This ensures your generosity endures in perpetuity, helping to secure the future of our faith.
