A celebration of religious life

17 August 2011

altSr Mary Scanlon celebrated 60 years with the Little Company of Mary last month.

As Fr Jeff Drane said in his tribute, this model of adaptability began life in 1929 and attended eight schools as the daughter of a school teacher and principal.

After training as a nurse, Mary entered the Little Company of Mary at 20 and was professed two years later in 1951. She nursed in Sydney and Adelaide where she also did midwifery.

She continued to adapt to change with creativity and tenacity when religious orders world wide moved from institutional to community-based care. She also helped bring palliative care to Wellington through Mary Potter Hospice in Newtown.
