A new building block at St Bernard’s College, Lower Hutt, was blessed and officially opened on 12 November last year by Cardinal John Dew. The opening began with liturgy and waiata in the school gym followed by the blessing and afternoon tea.
In recognition of the importance of religious education at the College, the new block of four classrooms for use by the Religious Studies Department, has been named ‘Montagne – after Jean-Baptiste Montagne, a 16-year-old French boy in the 19th century. Montagne, who was dying, inspired Fr Marcellin Champagnat to establish the religious community ‘The Marist Brothers of the Schools’ to make known, through the Brothers lives and service, the love of Jesus and Mary – especially where access to love and support, education and catechism was remote.
