Alpha programme

Alpha is an opportunity to explore life, faith and God in a friendly, open and informal environment.

“Alpha is a series of interactive sessions exploring the basics of the Christian faith. Each session looks at a different question, and is assigned to create conversation. No two Alphas look the same – they run in coffee shops, churches, bars, prisons, universities, schools and homes. There’s no pressure, no follow-up and no charge; it’s just an open, informal, and honest space to explore and discuss life’s big questions together.”

Some Wellington parishes have run Alpha courses in the past and do so now, but there is renewed interest in the programme as a result of Fr James Mallon’s book “Divine Renovation”. Alpha has a strong track record in building community and bringing new people into parishes.

Recently people from some parishes in the Archdiocese gathered in person and some by Zoom to talk about bringing Alpha to their parishes with Chris Walkerdine of Parish Leadership Ministries. Chris stressed to participants that Alpha is a 4-7 year commitment for a parish to gain the maximum benefits from the programme.

As Alpha is a significant commitment for the parish the participants in the meeting are going to reflect upon what they learned and consult with others in their parishes.
