The New Zealand Catholic Bishops Conference made a submission to the Parliamentary Health Select Committee which has been tasked by the House of Representatives to “investigate fully public attitudes towards the introduction of legislation which would permit medically-assisted dying in the event of a terminal illness or an irreversible condition which makes life unbearable.” The bishops point out that the Catholic Church, through its many priests and lay people who deal with those who are dying and their families, has centuries of experience in end of life care, and has strong credentials to speak about dying.
