Waitangi Day

Bishop Jean-Baptiste François Pompallier was at the signing of Te Tiriti.

Today we mark Waitangi Day. Bishop Jean-Baptiste François Pompallier – the Missionary who celebrated the first Catholic Mass in Aotearoa in 1838 at Tōtara Point in Hokianga in Northland – was at the signing, advocating for protections for religious freedom.
