Wellington South Parishioners Tony and Eileen Muollo were each presented with a Benemerenti medal by Cardinal John Dew at St Francis de Sales Church, Island Bay, on Sunday 17 April 2016. The presentation was on the same day the community celebrated the church’s 50th anniversary.
Tony and Eileen have been Island Bay parishioners for 50 years and have served with great generosity in many areas of parish and community life. Tony was a leading member of the Legion of Mary for many years and is well known for visiting the sick and housebound, especially at the Vincentian Home in Berhampore. He visits every week and entertains residents by playing his accordion and chatting.
Eileen has been a member of the Catholic Women’s League and the Care and Concern Group, which provides meals for families in need, including expectant mothers and new babies, as well as bereavements. She is also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary, which, among other things, knits babies’ clothing for young mothers and raises money for Pregnancy Help. Eileen has organised parish morning teas for many years and continues to serve in this ministry of hospitality.
Tony and Eileen often serve the community together helping those in need. Their home has been a house of hospitality to local clergy for many years. Both are tireless supporters of the Missionary Sisters of St Peter Claver.
People at the celebration delighted in congratulating Tony and Eileen on this papal recognition of their very special contribution to parish and community.
