In just over a week’s time COP 26 will begin in Glasgow. It aims to accelerate action by countries on climate change. There are many detractors, including those who oppose this type of meeting and those who don’t think climate change is real. A recent document “leak” shows some coal and oil producing nations asking the UN to play down the need to move rapidly away from fossil fuels and others questioning paying more to help poorer countries to move to green technologies. As Pope Francis wrote in Laudato Si six years ago:
“There is an urgent need to develop policies so that, in the next few years, the emission of carbon dioxide and other highly polluting gases can be drastically reduced, for example, substituting for fossil fuels and developing sources of renewable energy. Worldwide there is minimal access to clean and renewable energy.”
He also wrote a prayer which we might use in these weeks as the countries gather to make decisions about the future of our generation and those to come:
“God of love, show us our place in this world
as channels of your love
for all the creatures of this earth,
for not one of them is forgotten in your sight.
Enlighten those who possess power and money
that they may avoid the sin of indifference,
that they may love the common good, advance the weak,
and care for this world in which we live.
The poor and the earth are crying out.
O Lord, seize us with your power and light,
help us to protect all life,
to prepare for a better future,
for the coming of your Kingdom
of justice, peace, love and beauty.
Praise be to you!
Amen.”
