WelCom February 2017:

Youth, Schools, Education

Kathy Whelan

The Catholic Foundation of the Archdiocese of Wellington congratulates the eight students who have received its scholarships for the 2017 tertiary studies year and beyond and wishes them all well in their chosen courses. The Foundation also recognises the applicants who were not successful but who were of equally high calibre and also wishes them well in their future studies.

The awards were presented at college prizegivings at the end of 2016.

The Foundation awards six general scholarships and two refugee scholarships to students from Catholic colleges in the archdiocese. Catholic students at state colleges in areas where there are no Catholic colleges are also eligible. Academic qualifications as well as all-round qualities of the students and their potential contributions to the Church are considered.

The scholarships are continuing scholarships each worth $3000 a year for three years. Funding comes from donations and bequests to the Catholic Foundation. The Foundation was established by Cardinal Thomas Williams in 1981 to further enable the work of the Archdiocese.

This year the Foundation has also sponsored the boarding costs to Garin Hostel in Nelson for three Kaikōura students whose families’ finances were devastated as a result of the November earthquake and who faced having to leave Garin College. Two of these students are in their last year of studies. (See next month’s WelCom.)

Details of how to apply for a scholarship are on the Catholic Foundation’s website (www.catholicfoundation.org.nz/scholarships.php).

Kathy Whelan is secretary for the Catholic Foundation, Wellington.
