On Good Friday, the Hutt Valley Ecumenical walk of witness began at the St James Anglican Church.
More than 400 people walked together as the group moved onto the Lower Hutt Baptist Church, then to Ss Peter and Paul Catholic Church and finished at St Marks United Congregation Church where we all had hot cross buns and tea and coffee together.
The dramatisations began with ‘the garden of Gethsemane‘ at St James and included an original composition sung by Rev Jean Malcolm, then onto ‘Peter’s denial’ at the Baptist church where the whole congregation was asked to join in.
At Ss Peter and Paul Church a life-like dramatisation of the ‘Crucifixion of Jesus’ was acted out by young and old parishioners and this all took place in the sunshine, outside the church buildings as they are closed for earthquake assessments.
Jesus’ death on the cross was well portrayed by my Dad, John van Woerkom. At St Marks the costuming was wonderful as they enacted ‘the Tomb Scene’ and afterwards everyone enjoyed the delicious morning tea.
It was a great chance for the Hutt Valley churches to come together and walk through the streets showing our united beliefs and giving thanks for Jesus’ sacrifice for us all.
