The first Newtown People’s Market and Boot Sale was such a success last year that organisers have decided to run it each month on the last Saturday, 11am to 3pm at St Anne’s Church Hall, Emmett Street, Newtown.
‘It’s starting to take on a life of its own which is just what we wanted,’ says Duncan Holland, one of the organising group. ‘People are coming forward and asking to take part—people who want to sell a few things from their car boot or run a food or clothing stall; others want to share information about gardening or just do some networking. We’ll have a lot more prepared food for sale this year and some great music.’
Dried foods will be another addition to the fresh produce sold at reasonable prices at the trial market in November last year.
The idea for the market grew from concern at the escalating cost of food to local people on low incomes. A group of people explored the impact of this on the Newtown community and interviewed a number of residents. They found there was a need not only for affordable, good quality food, but also for community sharing.
‘We are excited by the number of young people and different cultural groups that are getting involved. It will be a regular, grass roots community event,’ says Mr Holland.
