New Zealand’s housing situation is devastating for vulnerable families and individuals. After last year’s fundraising event for organisations helping the homeless, the 14-Hour Sleep Out event for October’s World Homeless Day is on again this year. Participants will come together at 6pm, 7 October, in a central city location to hear from those involved before sleeping out in a car, or on couch or cardboard shelter to fundraise for one of the agency projects.
In Palmerston North the Sleep Out is at the Square on Wednesday 5 October with support from the New Zealand Defence Force 2nd Combat Service Support Battalion. In Wellington the Sleep Out is on Friday 7 October.
Go on line to 14hourshomeless.org.nz to find out more, to register to take part or to make a donation to support an organisation involved.
Last year in Wellington, 230 people came together to raise $60,000. The Wellington Homeless Women’s Trust raised $14,000 in sponsorship (visit www.homeless.org.nz).
